چکیده

The structure of a very bright (MV = −10.9) globular cluster in NGC 1023 is analyzed on two sets of images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. From careful modeling of King profile fits to the cluster image, a core radius of rc = 0.55 ± 0.1 pc, effective radius Re = 3.7± 0.3 pc and a central surface brightness of μ0(V ) = 12.9± 0.5 mag arcsec−2 are derived. This makes the cluster much more compact than ω Cen, but very similar to the brightest globular cluster in M31, G1 = Mayall II. The cluster in NGC 1023 appears to be very highly flattened with an ellipticity of ǫ ≈ 0.37, even higher than for ω Cen and G1, and similar to the most flattened clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Using spectra obtained with the Keck I telescope we have demonstrated conclusively that the faint (23≤V≤ 24 mag.) and unusually extended objects we discovered in HST images of the lenticular galaxies, NGC 1023 and NGC 3384, are star clusters associated with their respective galaxies. In the case of NGC 1023 we were further able to establish that these objects are old (≥7–8 Gyr), moderately meta...

Visual and near-infrared colours are used to identify intermediate-age globular cluster in early-type galaxies. In NGC 5846 and NGC 4365 colour-colour diagrams (V-I vs. V-K) reveal a sub-population in the globular cluster systems with an age much younger than the expected old populations (13-15 Gyr). A comparison with SSP models dates the formation of this younger population 2-7 Gyr back. Furth...

We present the first measurement of the globular cluster populations of galaxies in Hickson compact groups, in order to investigate the effect of these high density environments on the formation and evolution of globular cluster systems. Based on V and R band images that we obtained of HCG 22a and HCG 90c with the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT), we find a total globular cluster population o...

A velocity dispersion has been measured for the luminous globular cluster M31 037–B327, claimed to be the most massive star cluster in the Local Group and to be a young “super star cluster” that has survived to an old age. M31 037– B327 has a mass comparable to that of M31 G1, but not significantly larger. Although near the upper end for the mass distribution of globular clusters, it is not an ...
